Welcome Dr. Melissa Parsons-Doherty to our Executive Board!

Project K-9 Hero would like to welcome Dr. Melissa Parsons-Doherty, DVM, DACVIM (Oncology) as an additional Medical Director to our Executive Board.
Dr. Parsons-Doherty has been a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) since 2013. She is originally from Canada and received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at the Atlantic Veterinary College in Prince Edward Island. She completed a Rotating Internship in Medical Oncology and Residency in the in the United States .
After completing her training in the United States, she briefly returned to Canada and practiced at the Ontario Veterinary College. In 2014, Dr. Parsons-Doherty returned to the U.S. and settled in the Houston, Texas area. While practicing Veterinary Medical Oncology she has been committed to accessing and providing care for working dogs with cancer. K-9 Ace, a working dog patient with cancer initially caught her attention, and in researching funding for Ace, she learned about Project K-9 Hero and their amazing mission. Project K-9 Hero funded Aces’ care when he needed help in retirement to save his life.
In 2019, Dr. Parsons-Doherty took the leap and established the first Veterinary Specialty hospital in the Houston area dedicated to the care of dogs and cats with cancer, Pearland Animal Cancer and Referral Center. In May 2023, the second location, The Woodlands Animal Cancer and Referral Center opened.
Dr. Parsons-Doherty has made her home in Houston with her husband, two German Shepherds, one hound mix, and six cats and is excited and honored to support Project K-9 Hero and their canine recipients.
