Please Welcome K-9 Bonnie (Z127) #304
Please welcome K-9 “Bonnie” (Z127), as the 304th program member to the Project K-9 Hero Pack! Bonnie served with Amtrak Police, as an Explosive Detection K-9, all over the United States since 2016.
Prior to be partnered with Sgt. Micah Jones, K-9 Bonnie was an active Explosive Detection Canine in Hawaii, Utah, and Oregon before being returned back to Lackland Air Force Base in Texas for re-teaming purposes. Sgt. Jones and Bonnie became partners in 2021, when Sgt. Jones traveled to Lackland after the retirement of his previous K-9 partner, K-9 Summer (PK9H Pack Member #124).
After countless hours and days of building rapport, training and working together, Sgt. Jones and Bonnie have become inseparable no matter where the job has sent them as an Explosive Detection Canine team. K-9 Bonnie’s primary duties and responsibilities were patrolling the historical Union Station in Washington D.C.. Up until her official retirement this past week on October 3rd, 2024, Bonnie was responsible for boarding trains, the protection of Amtrak passengers, personnel, and infrastructure all while conducting tactical train rides from DC-NYC.
Bonnie also performed K-9 sweeps and protection details for VIP’s and foreign dignitaries, at events such as the State of the Union for the President of the United States. Bonnie was key in securing multiple special events, national sporting competitions, plus providing mutual aid to surrounding Local, State, and Federal Law Enforcement agencies with bomb threats and VIP arrivals. Additionally, Bonnie deployed to provide assistance during the New Years Eve celebration in Las Vegas, Nevada in 2022.
In early 2018, K-9 Bonnie was hit by a vehicle in Salt Lake City, Utah while performing her duties with her previous Handler. Due to this incident, she had surgical repair of her left medial luxating patella in July 2018 leaving a rod in her leg. This surgery and her bilaterally luxating patella predisposed Bonnie to develop Degenerative Joint Disease (DJD). Bonnie has had a Grade I-II/V hindlimb lameness, crepitus in both of her stifles, and resistance to bilaterial hip extension. Bonnie also has a history of dental disease with moderate dental abrasion. She has had one canine tooth extracted, and root canals in the other three, requiring regular comprehensive oral health assessments and treatments to maintain her overall health which are extremely costly.
Even though Bonnie served throughout the entire country so bravely, all of her medical bills and prescriptions were the responsibility of her Handler. But now, PK9HERO will be covering all of Bonnie’s future office visits, diagnostic testing, medications, and surgeries at 100%, for the rest of her life. It is the least we can do for K-9 Bonnie, for dedicating her life to the safety of our nation!
PK9H is here to protect you after all you have done to serve the United States of America .
Our Medical Fund will help ensure that we always have medical bill payments for Heroes like Bonnie. Please donate today to continue supporting our life-saving abilities.
