Please Welcome K-9 Chief #302
Please welcome K-9 Chief as the 302nd Program Member inducted into our Project K-9 Hero Pack. Chief bravely served as a Dual-Purpose Patrol/Narcotics Detection K-9, from 2017 through 2023, with Michigan State Police Canine Unit in Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan.
In his seven years of unwavering dedication, Chief participated in approximately 1,000 requests for service during his working career. These include, but are not limited to, numerous criminal tracking suspect apprehensions, locating multiple missing and endangered elderly and children, seizing hidden evidence including firearms and electronics, plus countless illegal narcotics finds.
Chief received national media recognition for his successes on multiple occasions. Check out some of these news stories that feature just a few of his heroic efforts!

Now in retirement, K-9 Chief suffers from Pannus, or chronic superficial keratitis, which is an immune-mediated condition that affects the cornea, or clear part of the eye, that is common among his breed. Pannus leads to blindness and has also cause for increased anxiety. The treatment of Pannus is life-long and the medication is expensive, especially when required for the duration of his life. Chief's loss of sight has lead to anxiety issues and reduced quality of life. Even though Chief has served the State of Michigan so bravely, all of his medical bills and prescriptions are now the responsibility of his Handler.
Project K-9 Hero will now be covering all of his future office visits, diagnostic testing, medications, and surgeries at 100%, for the rest of his life. It is the least we can do for K-9 Chief for dedicating his life to helping others.
