Please Welcome K-9 Zane #303
Please welcome K-9 Zane as the 303rd Program Member inducted into our Project K-9 Hero Pack!
K-9 Zane bravely served as a Dual-Purpose Patrol/Narcotics Detection K-9 from 2016 through 2024 with New Braunfels Police Department in Texas. During his eight years of service, Zane was an outstanding Police K-9 who served with a great amount of distinction and heroism. He performed search warrants with in the City of New Braunfels and beyond with a variety of State, Local, and Federal Law Enforcement Agencies, taking countless amounts of illegal narcotics off the streets, and tracking down dangerous criminals throughout the region.
Since his retirement, Zane had been living a happy and healthy life until September 23rd, when he had emergency surgery to remove a foreign object blocking his small intestine.
Complications from surgery and general anesthesia started on Tuesday, September 24th, and continued through Wednesday, September 25th. Then it became necessary for Zane to be transferred to an animal hospital in San Antonio, with a critical care unit and 24/7 care for the following complications: irregular liver blood work; heart arrhythmia; gall bladder backup; concerns for small intestine function; and fever. While at the animal hospital, scans showed an abnormal spleen on Saturday, September 26th.
Zane’s Handler applied for medical assistance through PK9H on Friday, September 27th as the bills were piling up daily by the thousands of dollars. We immediately reached out to his Handler and assessed the entire situation, and unanimously agreed to place K-9 Zane into our organization. We worked with both veterinary offices to refund the entire amount of the payments back to his Handler's account.
As of October 1st, Project K-9 Hero had all of the charges that had to be deposited or paid reversed to our card, which totaled $9,850.96.
Several days of emergency critical care for a retired working dog can be very expensive, and regardless of Zane’s honorable service to the State of Texas and the citizens of New Braunfels, all of Zane’s medical costs are the responsibility of his Handler.
We at PK9HERO are so honored to be able to remove this financial burden, for K-9 Zane and his still actively serving Handler. We will also be paying for all of his medical care, prescriptions, surgical procedures at 100% for the rest of his life.
