Please Welcome K-9 Brit #374
Please welcome retired K-9 “Brit” to the Project K-9 Hero Pack as our 374th Program Member.
K-9 Brit is a 5 1/2 year old male Belgian Malinois/German Shepherd mix, who honorably served with the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office for four years before he was severely injured while still on active duty. K-9 Brit was fetching his reward toy from his Handler, and when he leaped in the air to grab it, he landed awkwardly on his right rear leg, causing a compound fracture. A rod was required to be placed inside of Brit’s leg, along with four screws to hold it in place.
The incident forced Brit into an early medical retirement. Unfortunately, his medical care is no longer covered now that he isn’t an active Police K-9. His original Handler moved on from the agency, and Brit is now happily living with a former Deputy who once worked with him, and volunteered to take him in his home for the remainder of his life.
The hardware in Brit’s leg was doing well until recently, when several abscesses were located where the screw placement is. It was determined that the area is currently infected, and that the old hardware needs to be removed, the area of the infection be treated, and replaced with new hardware. This is an immediate medical need for Brit, and surgery has already been scheduled for February 18th, 2026 with an estimated cost of the procedure being up to $3,500.
This is causing a financial burden on the new owner, who volunteered to care for Brit when no one else would. The very last thing we at Project K-9 Hero want to see is Brit go without the medical assistance he needs just because his bills were not affordable. Therefore, we are honored to step up and pay for Brit’s pending surgery plus medical care, frequent office visits, necessary prescription medication, and any future diagnostic testing or surgeries for the rest of his life, at 100%.
