Please Welcome (MWD) “Blues”(A063) #297
Please welcome Military Working Dog (MWD) "Blues" (A063) to our Project K-9 Hero Pack as our 297th program member! MWD Blues spent seven years assigned to the U.S. Army's 513th Military Working Dog Detachment in Fort Bliss, Texas.
MWD Blues was certified as a Patrol/Narcotics Detection Dog that served with the utmost distinction during his career. Blues deployed in support of combat operations in Kuwait as a part of Operation Spartan Shield. In addition to his service overseas, he participated in numerous felony arrests in and around the Fort Bliss and El Paso, Texas area, protecting the American Public from dangerous criminals.
Just last month, on July 26th, 2024, Blues was medically retired due to a myriad of health conditions that he suffered while on active duty. MWD Blues is blind in one eye, and is expected to soon loose complete vision in his other. He has severe dental, skin, and hip issues to add to the list of his ongoing medical needs. Throughout his career, he suffered a case of worms, and a spider bite, that both almost took his life.
At his retirement ceremony last month, none of his former Handlers were able to take him in to give him a good home. However, still actively serving, U.S. Army Military Police Officer Katelyn Mack stepped forward to help this Hero out when she had no moral or ethical obligation to do so. Katelyn is currently going through a medical separation from service herself, and will take Blues with her to live out the rest of his days, with her husband and two children in East Texas.
MWD Blues is in need of immediate, continuous medical attention, and is on medication that costs hundreds of dollars a month. This leaves only two options, which is for his new owner, who adopted him out of the goodness of her heart, to go into extreme personal debt, or for MWD Blues to go without help, since he is no longer financially covered by the military.
Since we at Project K-9 Hero don’t want to see either of those happen, we are placing MWD Blues in our program as our newest member. PK9H will cover all future office visits, prescriptions, surgeries, and medical needs at 100% for the remainder of his life. It’s the least we can do for him after all he has done for our country!
