Project K-9 Hero Welcomes K-9 Bond As Its 300th Program Member
WHITWELL, TN – Project K-9 Hero is proud to announce the admission of K-9 Bond, a Dual Purpose Narcotics and Patrol Dog, as its 300th Program Member. This milestone marks a significant achievement for the organization, dedicated to providing care and support for retired Police K-9s and Military Working Dogs.
K-9 Bond retired on August 14, 2024, after a distinguished career of service. Throughout his time with the Olney Police Department in Texas, Bond successfully tracked numerous criminals and played a key role in removing drugs from the streets. His impressive achievements include placing in Patrol and Tracking at the USPCA in 2023 and earning 2nd place in Tracking at USPCA Region 25 Trials in Wichita Falls, TX, just weeks before his Handler's diagnosis with stage 4 cancer.
Bond's handler, Cpl. Miranda Wright, passed away on August 3, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Lubbock, Texas, on March 25, 1977, Miranda dedicated 20 years to serving the citizens of the City of Olney and Young County, alongside loyal K-9 partners, including K-9 Fox, K-9 Sam, and her final partner, K-9 Bond. Miranda found her permanent home in Olney, where she became an integral part of the Olney Police Department and Olney EMS.
In her free time, Miranda enjoyed training with K-9 Bond and her local training group, affectionately known as the "K9 Kult." She also loved traveling with her partner, Dustin, and friends, often visiting new destinations and embarking on Ghost Tours.
Following Miranda's passing, K-9 Bond was adopted by fellow K-9 Handler, Sergeant Hailey Calcote, who now provides him with the specialized care he needs, including prescription food for his allergies and medication for his anxiety. Bond's story is a testament to the connection between a K-9 and their Handler, and to the unwavering dedication of those who serve our communities.
“After adopting Bond, the one thing that was a worry for me were the expenses associated with Bond: His vet bills, prescription dog food, and anxiety medication. I already had three personal dogs and my own K-9,” Calcote said. “Project K9 Hero accepting Bond means more than anyone could know. The financial burden has been lifted and I know that he will always be taken care of. Project K-9 Hero will help carry the legacy of K-9 Cpl. Miranda Wright and K-9 Bond for years to come.”
"We couldn’t think of a better candidate for our 300th member than Bond," said Jason Johnson, Founder of Project K-9 Hero. "His case embodies everything that our organization stands for—to assist members of law enforcement and to ensure that their faithful companions receive the care they deserve after their service. We are grateful to both K-9 Bond and to Miranda Wright for their service to our communities and are honored to accept Bond into our Pack."
In lieu of flowers for Cpl. Wright, her family asks that donations be made to Project K-9 Hero, 309 Bear Pen Rd., Whitwell, Tennessee 37397, to support the ongoing care of K-9 Bond and other retired K-9 Heroes.
