HOW TO CONTACT YOUR CONGRESSIONAL REPRESENTATIVE
A Quick Guide To Your Phone Call
To effectively advocate for the causes you believe in you will have to call your congressional representative. You can look up their phone number by the link below.
Here are some tips to help you navigate your phone call with your representative.
1. Introduction
Introduce yourself and why you are taking time to call them. For example, "Hi, my name is Jason and I'm calling to express my support for the K-9 Hero Act (H.R. 5081)." Keep in mind your representative is busy so be direct.
2. Your WHY
Briefly share your story. Tell them why this bill matters to you, and remind them why it matters to their district.
For example, “I’ve lived in your district in Michigan for 5 years. I've worked in law enforcement for my whole career and I specialized in narcotics as a K-9 handler. I witnessed the great work humans and dogs do together. It was a great honor for me to work with K-9 Bear. Unfortunately Bear suffered injuries on duty during a raid and had to retire from law enforcement. I was shocked when I found out my department doesn't allocate funds to help dogs in retirement with injuries they sustained on duty. When I heard this I knew I had to speak up and try to do something. We care for our veterans when they come home. Shouldn't we do the same for our K-9 heroes?”
3. Request Their Support
Communicate your appreciation for your congressman's service to your community and request their support. “You’ve been a great advocate for our community. I trust that you will do everything in your power to help retired working dog heroes like Bear.”
