Are you a resident of the state of Michigan?
We need your help to pass Dozer's Law!
Dozer's Law is in the process of moving forward, but we need every resident of Michigan to reach out to the House Criminal Justice Committee via email, phone, or postal mail BEFORE December 31st, 2024 and let them know that you support HB6042 and HB6043.
If you live in Michigan, use or edit this sample text to contact Representative Kara Hope, Chair of the House Criminal Justice Committee:
Dear Representative Hope:
I am a resident of Michigan, my zip code is XXXXX, and I am writing to let you know that I support HB6042 (penalties for killing or causing serious physical harm to a police dog, police horse, or search and rescue dog who are attempting to, or are committing a crime) and HB6043 (sentencing guidelines for killing or causing serious physical harm to a police dog, police horse, or a search and rescue dog who are attempting to, or are committing a crime.) These animals put their lives in harm's way to protect our communities, and it is only fair that we protect them in return and make injuring or killing them a crime. I urge you to support these two bills in recognition of K-9 Dozer and in support of future police officers and their animal partners for generations to come. You can help make the changes these heroic animals deserve!
Send your postal letters to:

Learn more about the bills and read them in their entirety.
Meet K-9 Dozer
See the accident that injured Dozer and how he joined Project K-9 Hero.
All About K-9 Dozer
K-9 Dozer officially retired from the Grand Rapids Police Department after a tragic accident in August of 2023 left him with a life-threatening spinal injury.
K-9 Dozer was only four years old, and was having an outstanding career as a Dual-Purpose Patrol/Narcotics Detection K-9 until a speeding, out-of-control car hit his patrol vehicle while on duty and responding to a crime in progress with his Handler Teddy VanVliet.
The incident left K-9 Dozer paralyzed with doubts he may ever be able to walk again.
Due to Michigan laws at the time, the individuals involved in the accident were not prosecuted for injuring K-9 Dozer.
He is Project K-9 Hero's Program Member for life and we will cover his medical costs at 100%. We hope that, going forward, state laws will protect these K-9 Heroes and give them the justice they deserve.
