K-9 Mattis proudly served six years with the Alpharetta Department of Public Safety as a Dual-Purpose K-9 specializing in Patrol, Tracking, and Narcotics Detection. Throughout his career, he became the most decorated K-9 in the department’s history, earning the Officer of the Year Award, the Director’s Award, and even a Purple Heart after being injured during a courageous 30-foot apprehension in the line of duty.
Beyond his service, Mattis and his handler, Sergeant Mark Tappan, inspired communities across the nation through public appearances, children’s education, and even television features on America’s Top Dog, Live PD, Good Morning America, and more. Together, they became advocates for the K-9 profession, embodying loyalty, bravery, and service.
In retirement, Project K-9 Hero was honored to cover 100% of Mattis’ medical care, ensuring he received the dignified post-service life he deserved. While Mattis has since crossed the Rainbow Bridge, his story continues to inspire, and his memory will always remain part of the PK9H Pack.
